In life we all go through seasons, ebbs and flows if you will. I have been going through a learning season and have come to realize many things, a few of which really stand out to me. As we come to the end of March already, I have decided to share the top 3 things I have learned and to help you put these things into perspective in your own life, I also created this great printable that you can use to slow down and get in touch with yourself and where you are at so far in 2016. This is going to be an amazing year, I can feel it.
#1 You are exactly where you are meant to be
Have you ever had that feeling that something just wasn’t right, you just couldn’t pinpoint what it was exactly? I was there last October. Something was off, I wasn’t fulfilled, I just had no idea what was going to fix it. I had all these amazing plans for the Holiday season and my business but I felt like I was on the outside looking in and no amount of planning or writing or talking was getting me any closer to feeling fulfilled.
If you know me at all, you know I really truly believe everything happens for a reason. Long story short, there were many signs I should have seen, but didn’t right away. All of those signs were pointing me in a direction I didn’t know I could go and something needed to happen to change my trajectory. I decided that I was done waiting for someday and I literally pulled my car to the side of the road and I called the number that I saw in my inbox every week, I enrolled myself in school to be a health coach. See all of the things that were leaving me feel unfulfilled – were actually just me being bored with the same ol same ol!
I had the full support of my husband and I dove in head first. I believe I am right where I am supposed to be, and not feeling like I was… was all part of the plan.
#2 Your body is amazing
If you slow down and listen, your body will tell you everything you need to know. The key is to slow down. This is quite possibly the hardest thing to ask someone to do, but probably one of the most effective things I have discovered in 2016. There have been some big changes in our home lately and just taking the extra time to stick to our schedule, be prepared and make the important things a priority has made the transitions we have made so much easier.
The biggest thing that has changed is that we are expecting baby #3 in July! I have come to realize that before this pregnancy, I was taking care of myself superficially. I was working out and eating real food, but I wasn’t listening to my body. I wasn’t taking responsibility for why I was having digestive issues or why I was stressed and yelling at my kids when they would do something I didn’t like.
One thing I have made a priority is yoga and meditation. I don’t have a dedicated room with comfy pillows a beautiful rug, candles and Buddha statues. But what I do have is 5 minutes to shut off the light in my office and just be. That is it. Be there, in the moment and just breathe. Doing this one simple thing probably equals the “high” I feel after a great workout at the gym or a run on a sunny day. Honestly. There are so many benefits to just slowing down that I could probably write a book. (And maybe I will!)
Another thing that has helped is writing. Not blogging or making another brain-dump to-to list, but right when I wake up in the morning I just grab my journal and write whatever is in my mind. Sometimes it is what I need to get done that day, sometimes it’s a dream I had, sometimes it is a list of things I am grateful for. What you write doesn’t matter, it is just taking that time for yourself right away when you wake up that is very relaxing.
#3 Helping other people is the best thing you can do for yourself
I have talked about self care forever. It is so important to take care of yourself and your body. But, since starting with IIN in the fall, I have really started looking at things in a whole new way. Teaching other people to take care of themselves and giving them permission to love their bodies – just as they are, is the most empowering feeling. When you start to learn something that not everyone else knows, it is easy to get a know-it-all attitude, and unfortunately for the people in my life, that is how I have been to a certain extent. I want to help, but always thinking I needed recognition for what I was helping with. Since the beginning of the year, I have really started working on how I come across and how my message is perceived by the other person. I want to be a better listener and I want to help people figure out for themselves what it is they need, it is not my responsibility to heal, but to help you heal yourself. I want these things for my clients, not for me. That is a freeing feeling!
These are just a few of the things that I have come to realize so far this year. What has changed for you? Do you have any tips to share?
