You know how it goes, you get an invite to a wedding or realize that beach vacation you have been waiting for is really sneaking up on you. You have 6 weeks and you want to lose 25 or more pounds. Ugghh! Now every time you walk by the mirror, what are you thinking? I’m fat… I’ll never get to wear that swim suit… Maybe I should postpone the trip or cancel my RSVP to the wedding. Then, you have a light bulb moment! “I’ll just start this super intense workout video series, it only costs $300 and they said I can lose 10 pounds each week! And to make sure I lose all the weight, I am going to throw away all of my food and buy $300 worth of kale, celery, cucumbers and protein powder. I will go on a juice and protein drink diet. I’ll lose all this water weight (that’s what all this weight is, right?)” Then, 3 days later, you are exhausted and starving so you stop at McDonalds on your lunch break and guilt seeps in and then you quit all together.
We have all been there, right? Procrastinate taking care of yourself because that bowl of cereal with your favorite late night TV show is way more fun than having some cut up veggies and getting a good night of sleep so you can get up and work out in the morning, right? Oh, no no no?! Wait! (sorry, I had a flashback!)
Anyway, this is SO not the right way to do things. I know, because I have been there. I used to literally watch The Biggest Loser – a weight loss show! And eat a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch or two. I guess because I wasn’t morbidly obese, it was OK for me to eat that garbage and then be so proud of the contestants when they lost 20 pounds in a week. I would tell myself that because I was so busy that day playing outside with the kids, I pretty much worked out. I was sure I had burned enough calories to eat that bowl of sugar and drink my wine and watch 2-3 hours of TV in one night! WHAT? I look back and shake my head, I know better now but I didn’t then and I remember how hard it was to look in the mirror and know I needed to change something, but not knowing what it was. I spent my fair share of time and money on magic pills and workout routines that didn’t get to the root of what I needed help with, my lifestyle.
That said, let me give you the top 5 mistakes you’re making when you are trying to get healthier. When I realized these things and did something to change it, everything changed!
#1) You talk negatively about yourself. This is the most damaging thing you can do, if you don’t have you own back, who else will? I’ve said this over and over, what you think will be. You need to be proud of yourself and you need to be grateful! Be grateful that you have the money to buy the food you’re eating and the clothes you’re wearing. Be grateful that you have the power to do whatever you set your mind to and that everything you need, to make the changes you need to make, are already inside you. Tell yourself you can do anything, you are worth it, you are amazing and you are beautiful. With this mindset, you are now in control of YOU and your emotions which is the first step!
#2) You expect results overnight. If this process was easy, everyone would do it. No one would let themselves go, everyone would be at their ideal weight, no one would be sick or unhealthy. Changing your lifestyle is the only way to guarantee the lifelong results you desire and for that there are no quick fixes. You have to do the work to earn the reward and that takes time. You can start small, but you just have to start. Which leads me into the next mistake…
#3) You think one more day won’t make a difference. I can eat the rest of this pizza, I will start working out, I’ll drink 2 gallons of water and I’ll only eat veggies tomorrow. Right. You’re lying to yourself every time you postpone a healthy decision. You have to start today, right now. No, for real… stand up and stretch, do 5 jumping jacks, go up and down the steps twice or go for a walk. NOW. If you wait until after work, you will be tired, you’ll need to make dinner, you’ll have an excuse. Time is one thing you never get back, do not waste it. Small steps everyday are what make you successful, not one 5 mile walk once a week.
#4) You think you can do this alone, assuming it can’t be that hard. Living a healthy lifestyle is not an easy task. There are temptations everywhere you look, the general population puts no value or priority into taking care of their bodies. It’s easier and faster and they don’t have to face the guilt if they don’t acknowledge their choices as bad or unhealthy, much less justify it to anyone. I have faced so much adversity in trying to change the future of my family’s health, even from friends and family. You making healthy choices, makes them feel threatened. You need a partner or 5, you need a cheerleader, you need someone to help you on the hard days, you need someone to kick your butt when you get overwhelmed and you’re ready to quit. This is non-negotiable.
#5) You get rid of everything you know and start from scratch. This is a recipe for disaster! You need to take it one step at a time. Worry more about adding good things than removing bad things. When you fill your grocery cart with fresh produce, you won’t have room for the boxed stuff (don’t want to squish your tomatoes!) Same thing emotionally. If you fill your head with happy, positive, encouraging thoughts, you won’t have room to be negative or hurtful.
If you are making these mistakes, this is your wake up call and you are not alone! If you are ready to start living the life you want and getting your body back to what you want it to be. Start here and if you need a support system and a cheerleader, I’m here for you. Really, email me, I will get back to you. I know how you feel, I’ve been there and I want to help you get your life on track.
